CAREFUL WITH THE MUD BRICKS
Although we at times have used mud-brick in building construction, this
paragraph from an article in National
Geographic on
Yemen
(April 2000) serves as a warning in using mudbrick. The article refers to
the timeless serenity of the architecture of the slim mud-brick high-rise
buildings in a town called Shibam, but offers a warning: "Late in
the afternoon, flocks of tourists laden with cameras perch on a bluff
opposite the town to capture on film the majic moment when the setting sun
turns the town to gold. Their shots are marred, however, because the house
in their immediate forground has collapsed in an untidy heap of mud, like
a sand castle overcome by the tide. "The family that owned it went off to
Saudi Arabia eight years ago and left a tap dripping," said a local
resident. "The whole house melted." Reflecting on this, the ultimate in
dripping-tap horror stories ..."
